Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore specific situations and concerns related to play therapists`` awareness in a play therapy room. Non-structured interviews were carried out with 10 participants who held certification as a play therapist recognized by the Korea Association for Play Therapy and who also had more than 10 years of clinical experience. Data was analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research tool. The results revealed 10 themes associated with participants`` awareness. First, the experience of the awareness in the play therapy room revealed two dominant themes: awareness related to the therapist and awareness related to children. Second, the impact of the awareness in the course of play therapy was divided into three other themes: positive impact, negative impact, and no impact. Third, factors disturbing the awareness involved three themes: therapy factors, client factors, and external factors. Finally, two themes arose from efforts aimed at improving skills regarding awareness: a technical method and personal method. This study examined the most significant factors related to the awareness of the play therapist and strategies to improve skills related to awareness. This present study provides a plethoraof valuable data to improve the training of therapists and the continuous improvement of their skills.
